When was the track constructed?
The Circuit of The Americas, a project designed by Hermann Tilke in collaboration with the American architectural firm HKS, faced various challenges during its construction phase. Despite the setbacks, the wait was rewarded when the track was inaugurated on October 21, 2012, by the 1978 F1 champion, Mario Andretti.
When did the first Grand Prix occur?
In 2012, Formula 1 made its debut at the Circuit of The Americas, marking the return of the United States Grand Prix after the 2007 race in Indianapolis. Notably, more than 100,000 spectators filled the Austin venue, witnessing Lewis Hamilton's final victory in a McLaren before his transition to Mercedes in 2013.
How the circuit feel's like?
The layout of COTA might seem familiar to racing enthusiasts. Turns 3 to 6 bear a resemblance to Silverstone's high-speed section through Maggotts/Becketts or the S Curves at Suzuka. Similarly, Turns 12 to 15 imitate Hockenheim's stadium section. Moreover, the uphill stretch leading into the expansive Turn 1, reflecting Texas's penchant for grandeur, has provided ample opportunities for exciting overtaking maneuvers in the track's relatively brief history.
